Obituary of Kathryn Olschan
Kathryn (Kathy) Nicola Olschan, age 71, of Easton, beloved wife of Andrew (Andy) Olschan and mother to Jacqueline (Jackie), Samantha and Matthew, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Kathryn was born in Bridgeport, CT to Nicholas and Elizabeth Nicola and raised in Fairfield, CT. She was named for her father’s hometown of Katerini, Greece. Her family was her world from a young age. She cherished her older brother, Robert (Bob) Nicola and was surrounded by doting aunts and wonderful cousins, with whom she shared many adventures and celebrations throughout the years. Andy and Kathy met as students and friends at Andrew Warde High School in 1965. They married in July 1977 and shortly thereafter made their home in Easton, alongside their siblings, who were also raising their young families there. Kathryn received her undergraduate degree from Central Connecticut State University and a Masters Degree from the University of Bridgeport. She devoted her career to elementary education. She taught for six (6) years at Roosevelt School in Bridgeport, CT; and for twenty (20) years at Samuel Staples Elementary School in Easton, CT where her granddaughters now attend. She was an exceptional teacher and dearly loved her students, valued her colleagues, and found great fulfillment and happiness in her work and connecting with her community. Kathryn also loved being a mother and grandmother, aunt and great aunt. She reveled in her family’s love and cherished watching it grow. A loving wife, mother, special Maia, sister, aunt, friend, colleague and forever teacher, Kathryn will be dearly missed. She reached out with sincere kindness and consideration to everyone she knew and touched all our hearts in many ways. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Olschan; her children, Jacqueline Olschan Kaufman and her husband, Ross of Easton, Samantha Jayne Olschan of Fairfield, Matthew Charles Olschan and his wife, Alaina of Bethel, and her three grandchildren, Eleanor Joy Kaufman (10), Charlotte Elizabeth Kaufman (7) and Benjamin Daniel Olschan (2 months). She is also survived by her brother, Robert Nicola and his wife, Diana, her sisters-in- law, Patricia Olschan Kusovitsky and her husband David, and Marjorie (Midge) Olschan Solomon and her husband Jack, and her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Road, Easton, CT with burial to follow in B’nai Israel Cemetery in Fairfield. Visitation will be observed outdoors at the family’s home Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Kindly wear a mask and practice social distancing for services and visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Dimitrie Church.
