Dan was born in New York City to parents Paul and Sylvia. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and went on to study mechanical engineering at City College and the University of Michigan where he graduated at the top of his class. At the end of his senior year he married Rita Silverman who he had asked to dance 3 years earlier in the Catskills. Dan started his prolific 50+year career as an engineer at DuPont in Wilmington DE and after obtaining top secret clearance was transferred to Indiana to work on the H-Bomb Project. Cultural divide of 1950’s Midwest and being raised in NYC brought Dan, Rita and baby Fran back to NJ where Dan started a 25 yr career at Uniroyal. Soon after moving to NJ his second daughter Susan arrived followed by Steven 5 yrs later. With a brilliant mind Dan pushed boundaries and was awarded dozens of patents in polymer and resin development, machine and tire design. Dan went on to receive 2 additional graduate degrees in Engineering. Uniroyal brought Dan and family to CT in 1972. Retiring from Uniroyal in the late 1970’s he continued in tire manufacturing for 2 yrs in Ohio before returning to CT as manager of R+D for US Surgical. At Surgical he played a pivotal role in the development and patenting of numerous minimally invasive surgical instruments – which remarkably are used by his son on an almost daily basis. After retiring from US Surgical Dan continued with innovations and patents spanning from insect repellents to cogeneration energy systems. Sailing was his passion, which he continued into his late 80’s in addition to his lap swimming that he continued up to a month before his passing. Above all else Dan cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. A graveside funeral is scheduled for 1pm on January 27, 2019 at B’nai Israel Cemetery, 472 Moose Hill Rd, Monroe CT.
